If the arm wasn't enough

A lot of guys ask me baby stuff before they become new dads. The most often asked is how one can know what a new baby wants when they scream.

I have a simple differential diagnosis list:
1. Hungry
2. Hungry
3. Hungry
4. Cold
5. Stinky (usually obvious)
6. Hungry
7. Hair tourniquet
A common problem dealt with by pediatric surgeons is the hair tourniquet. Basically a hair from mom can wrap around a digit (or a more sensitive appendage) and as the kid wiggles around the hair gets tighter and tighter until it can cause the body part to lose blood supply and fall off. We took Kate’s sock off to put a pulse ox on her toe, and we found one threatening the middle toe! We were really lucky the nurse wanted to use that foot because I’m sure we would have blamed all her screaming on her broken arm and never would have even noticed until it was too late. I took a picture after removing the hair to show others that this really does happen pretty commonly. Careful to those readers out there with sons...
